source notes & method
All values read from the World Bank API (SP.POP.65UP.TO, WDI last updated 8 Oct 2026) on 3 Nov 2026, rounded to 0.01 million. Population by age is modelled by the World Bank from UN World Population Prospects and national sources: estimates, not counts. Brazil 2025: 24.43M; Germany 19.79M; Russia 25.53M; Japan 37.00M. Brazil passed Germany in 2018 (18.40M vs 17.78M; 2017: 17.59M vs 17.60M). ×2.7 = 24.43/8.97 (2.72); Germany 19.79/13.53 = 1.46. Takeaway 3's second clause is an interpretation. Germany's series dips in 2011 (16.82M to 16.47M), a level shift in the published data rather than a real fall in older people; shown as published. 2017 was a near tie (17,587,410 vs 17,600,685).
