Sun and wind now beat fossil fuels in Chile
Share of Chile's electricity generation by source, 2025 vs 2019.
Wind and solar made more of Chile's electricity than coal, gas and oil combined in 2025.
Wind and solar's share almost tripled since 2019, while fossil fuels fell from 53% to 34%.
Solar alone made a quarter of Chile's power in 2025, the second-highest share in the world after Hungary.
the numbers
| Share of electricity, 2025 (%) | 2019 (grey bar) (%) | |
|---|---|---|
| wind and solar | 38 | 14 |
| fossil fuels (coal, gas, oil) | 34 | 53 |
| hydro and other clean | 28 | 33 |
source notes & method
2025 shares (wind and solar 38%, fossil 34%, low-carbon 66%) are from Ember's Chile country profile (updated 25 May 2026), which Ember rounds to whole numbers. 2019 shares (wind and solar 14%, fossil 53%, renewables 47%) are from Ember's release 'Chile surpasses 40% wind and solar for the first time in December' (10 Jan 2025, https://ember-energy.org/latest-updates/chile-surpasses-40-wind-and-solar-for-the-first-time-in-december/); 2019 and 2025 come from different Ember data vintages. 'Hydro and other clean' is derived: low-carbon minus wind and solar (66-38 = 28 in 2025; 47-14 = 33 in 2019; Chile has no nuclear power). Solar's 25% share and its global rank (second after Hungary) are from Ember's Global Electricity Review 2026 (p. 60, https://ember-energy.org/app/uploads/2026/04/Global-Electricity-Review-2026.pdf). The same January 2025 release put wind and solar at 33% and fossil at 30% in 2024, so the crossover first happened in 2024; Ember's earlier report 'Wind and solar overtake coal in Chile' (Oct 2022) found wind and solar first beat coal alone over Oct 2021-Sep 2022. '2.7x' / 'almost tripled' is derived (38/14 = 2.7).
