Egypt's sun and wind now outproduce its Nile dams
Share of Egypt's electricity generation by source, 2015–2025, Ember. Hydro is the Nile's dams, led by Aswan.
Of Egypt's electricity came from sun and wind in 2025 (19.3 TWh), more than the 6.1% from hydropower (14.8 TWh), for the first time.
Sun and wind output rose tenfold from 1.9 TWh in 2015; in 2025 alone it grew 55%.
Of Egypt's power still comes from gas: every new solar or wind farm cuts the gas it must burn or import.

Ember, yearly electricity data, read on the Ember API (api.ember-energy.org/v1/electricity-generation/yearly, entity_code EGY) on 3 Nov 2026. Generation in TWh (share of generation, %): 2015: wind and solar 1.94 (1.06), hydro 13.68 (7.52), gas 129.81 (71.39), other fossil 36.41 (20.02), total 181.84; 2020: 9.68 (4.88), 14.08 (7.09), 166.86 (84.02), 7.98 (4.02), total 198.61; 2023: 10.92 (4.92), 15.05 (6.78), 179.38 (80.83), 16.56 (7.46), total 221.92; 2024: 12.43 (5.24), 15.46 (6.52), 185.14 (78.11), 23.98 (10.12), total 237.0; 2025: 19.26 (7.94), 14.84 (6.12), 184.43 (76.08), 23.89 (9.86), total 242.42. 2025 split: wind 9.93 TWh (4.10%), solar 9.33 TWh (3.85%). Egypt has no coal, nuclear or bioenergy generation in the series; 'other fossil' is mostly oil (fuel oil and diesel). Sun and wind passed hydro for the first time in 2025 (2024: 12.43 vs 15.46 TWh). Egypt's hydropower plants are all on the Nile (Aswan High Dam, Aswan I and II, Esna, Naga Hammadi, Assiut). The latest Ember year can be provisional and revised. Pakistan was considered (Ember 2025: wind and solar 23.6% vs hydro 23.1% and gas 23.0%) but its margins are under a point and its series carries a coverage caveat; Viet Nam (sun and wind passed gas in 2021) is not used because 141 is a Viet Nam plate.
