source notes & method
Company data, not official statistics: counts GitHub accounts attributed to a country, not all software developers, and one person can hold more than one account. Total GitHub developers: more than 225 million. 'China, Brazil and Japan combined' (12.4 + 10.2 + 7.15 = 29.75 million) and the US–India gap are derived by progrss. Octoverse 2026 counts include private-repository activity and GitHub recalculated earlier years on this basis, so figures are not comparable with past Octoverse editions. This edition does not show India overtaking the US; Octoverse 2025 projected India at 57.5 million and the US at 54.7 million by 2030 (a GitHub forecast, not charted).
