Solar now makes more of Brazil's power than fossil fuels
Share of Brazil's electricity generation by source, 2025.
Solar produced more of Brazil's electricity than coal, oil and gas combined in 2025, for the first time.
Solar's share of Brazil's power rose from 2.6% in 2021 to 11.8% in 2025.
Hydro is still Brazil's biggest source, but drought cut its output by 25 TWh in 2025, a third straight annual fall.
the numbers
| Share of electricity generation (%) | |
|---|---|
| Hydro | 52.0 |
| Wind | 15.7 |
| Solar | 11.8 |
| Fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas) | 11.0 |
source notes & method
Hydro (52%), wind (15.7%), solar (11.8%) and solar's 2021 share (2.6%) are from Ember's Global Electricity Review 2026 Brazil section, which states that solar generation (89 TWh) surpassed fossil generation for the first time in 2025. Fossil share (11%) is from Ember's Brazil country profile (https://ember-energy.org/countries-and-regions/brazil), which Ember rounds to a whole number. Remaining ~10% is nuclear and bioenergy (not shown; Ember puts low-carbon at 89%). '4.5x' is derived (11.8/2.6 = 4.5).
